Hackneyed — Overused and thus cheapened, trite. E.g., In a job interview, you would be wise to avoid the terms ¨team player¨ and ¨people person¨, which have become so hackneyed they will turn off the interviewer immediately.

Bespoke — Custom-made or dealing in or producing custom-made articles. E.g., There is a marvelous shop for bespoke shirts on Jermyn Street near Piccadilly Circus.

Dampen — To deaden, depress. E.g., The current economic crisis threatens to dampen the real estate construction boom.

Billboard — A structure for the display of advertisements in public places, especially alongside roads or highways. E.g., The Spanish countryside is full of billboards for Osborne Brandy which feature an enormous black bull.

License — A permission granted by a competent authority to engage in a business or occupation or in an activity otherwise unlawful. E.g., While waiting to get our liquor license, our new restaurant will be serving a selection of mineral waters, fresh juices and fizzy drinks. E.g., When I turned 16 I got my driver´s license and a brand new Honda Civic.

Sangfroid — Imperturbability, abnormally extreme composure. E.g., Can you believe Jack´s sangfroid? In the board meeting and calmly denied any knowledge of the proposed takeover.

Scintillating — Animated and brilliant. E.g., At the dinner party last night, Tom told a scintillating anecdote that kept the entire room captivated for 20 minutes.

Subservient — Consciously subordinate or submissive. E.g., American regulators historically have been subservient to banking and big business.

Union — An organization of workers formed for the purpose of advancing its members´ interests in respect to wages, benefits and working conditions. E.g., The bus drivers´union has demanded a 5% wage increase and threatened a strike if management does not meet its demand.

Brochure — A flyer or small book used to advertise a product for sale or service available. E.g., The company created a fancy brochure for each of its main product groups.
